Worum es geht:
Was ist Diskriminierung? Wie und wo zeigt sie sich in der Designpraxis? Und wie kannst Du in deiner Designpraxis diskriminierungssensibel arbeiten? Um diesen komplexen Fragestellungen auf den Grund zu gehen schauen wir uns im Workshop zunächst gemeinsam an, was Diskriminierung ist und welche Analysewerkzeuge uns zur Verfügung stehen um sie zu benennen und zu reflektieren. Durch angeleitete Übungen analysiert Du wie Diskriminierung im Design sichtbar wird und welche Rolle Deine individuelle Positionierung für Deine Berufspraxis spielt. Gemeinsam erarbeiten wir Handlungsfelder in der Berufspraxis und geben Raum für häufig auftretende Unsicherheiten.

Referent*innen:
Lisa Baumgarten (sie/ihr) ist kritische Designvermittlerin, Gestalterin, Forscherin, Lehrende/Lernende und zertifizierte Social Justice & Diversity Trainerin. Sie ist Gründerin der partizipativen Plattform Teaching Design und bietet seit 2014 Bildungsformate in internationalen Kontexten an. Ihre Vermittlungsformate legen dabei einen Schwerpunkt auf intersektional-feministische Ansätze. Neben ihrer Praxis als freischaffende Gestalterin forscht und publiziert sie zur Designausbildung und Designvermittlung als kritische Praxis.
Anja Neidhardt-Mokoena (sie/ihr) forscht und lehrt in den Bereichen Design und Gender Studies an der Universität Umeå in Schweden. In ihrer Doktorarbeit entwickelte sie u.a. feministische Designstrategien zum Initiieren von Transformationsprozessen (in Designmuseen) hin zu mehr Gerechtigkeit. Anja hat einen MA-Abschluss in Design Curating & Writing, und einen BA-Abschluss in Kommunikationsdesign. Sie hat außerdem Erfahrung als Journalistin und Redakteurin und ist in verschiedenen feministischen Netzwerken (vor allem im Bereich Design) aktiv.

What it’s about:
What is discrimination? How and where does it show up in design practice? And how can you work against discrimination in your own design practice? To get to the bottom of these complex questions, we’ll begin the workshop by looking together at what discrimination is and which analytical tools are available to us for identifying and reflecting on it. Through guided exercises, you’ll analyse how discrimination becomes visible in design and what role your individual positioning plays in your professional practice. Together, we’ll develop areas and strategies for action in professional practice and create space for commonly arising uncertainties.

Facilitators:
Lisa Baumgarten (she/her) is a critical design mediator, designer, researcher, teacher/learner and certified Social Justice & Diversity Trainer. She is the founder of the participatory platform Teaching Design and has been offering educational formats in international contexts since 2014. Her educational formats place particular emphasis on intersectional-feminist approaches. Alongside her practice as a freelance designer, she researches and publishes on design education and design pedagogy as critical practice.
Anja Neidhardt-Mokoena (she/her) researches and teaches in the fields of design and Gender Studies at Umeå University in Sweden. In her doctoral thesis, she developed feminist design strategies for initiating transformation processes (in design museums) towards more just futures, amongst other things. Anja holds an MA in Design Curating & Writing and a BA in Communication Design. She also has experience as a journalist and editor and is active in various feminist networks (particularly in the design field).

Teaching Design started as a collectively gathered bibliography focusing on design education from intersectional feminist and decolonial perspectives. Since its launch in September 2019, it has expanded into conversational formats, workshops, a temporary library and a space for reflections, which all has led to the platform in its current form.
Currently the bibliography as well as this newsletter is curated and edited by Lisa Baumgarten unless mentioned otherwise.
